Pictures of Different Grooming Procedures

So many times we get people asking us how something is done, or in what order things are done in.  So, we will take a few moments to walk you through the steps.

There are four major parts to each groom.  While it varies a little from breed to breed the same principles are the same.

The first part is the Prep.

First, your dog is put on the grooming table to be assessed.  We check for the condition of the coat and if the dog has fleas or not.  (This determines the shampoos and conditioners that will be used in the next step.)  Also at the point, the dogs nails are trimmed, hair from between pads is removed, and the dog is given a sanitary trim.  (trimming of the underbelly and rectum area)

The next step is Bathing:

Once a dog is preped for his or her bath, it's time to get into the tub.  Here at The Dog S'Paw we use only premium dog shampoos.  We choose the best shampoo and conditioner based on your dogs' skin/coat type.  Your dog is bathed in warm water with a gental spray, while standing on a non-slip matt to prevent slips and falls.

The next step is drying and brush out:

Because it is extreamly hard on clippers, blades and shears to clip a dog with wet hair.  The dog MUST be 100% dry to get a good overall groom.  We use two methods of drying.  The first and more common way is to use a Non-Heated Force Dryer.  This dryer has no heating element so it will not get too hot on your dogs skin.  Instead it used the heat from the motor to warm the air as it is forced through the machine to dry your pet.  The second method is to put them into a crate and use a box fan on the outside of the crate to blow onto the dog.  Again there is no heat so the risk of your dog being hurt while drying is very low.

In order to be able to move the clippers or scissors through the hair seemlessly, the hair must be tangle free.  Each pet is brushed out, head to tail, completely.  what is too close to the skin to safely remove with a brush and comb WILL BE removed with clippers.

The final Step is the Haircut and Finish:

This is the part where the Bath only dogs can jump off.  For all the dogs who get a haircut, keep reading!

After the dog has been preped, bathed, dryed and brushed, its time for the hair cut and finish.  Each breed and personal preferance means that no two hair cuts are the same.  Each dog can be groomed to breed standard or to what your oldest child whats this time.  Each haircut can be custom tailored to fit that dog.  Meaning, if your dog is a little wider, we can take him a little shorter on the sides to compensate.  Once your dog is finished it will get bows and/or bandanna and a spritz of cologne.
